Polonnaruwa
Sri Lanka's second great capital, flourishing between the tenth and thirteenth centuries, spreads across a vast UNESCO-listed parkland of royal palaces, Buddhist shrines and the serene Gal Vihara rock carvings, among the finest Sinhalese sculpture anywhere in the world. The adjacent Parakrama Samudra reservoir, still in use today, stands as a testament to ancient engineering.
