Trincomalee
One of the world’s finest natural deep-water harbours, Trincomalee layers ancient Tamil kingdoms, colonial history and World War II heritage into a deeply rewarding port town. Hikkaduwa
One of Sri Lanka’s original beach destinations, Hikkaduwa retains vibrant energy driven by a protected coral sanctuary accessible by glass-bottom boat or snorkel, excellent intermediate surf and a lively strip of international restaurants and beach bars. Well-developed tourist infrastructure makes it a convenient and enjoyable base for exploring both Galle and Bentota in either direction.
Nilaveli
A near-deserted beach near Trincomalee with turquoise water, regularly cited as one of the island’s most beautiful, Nilaveli is paired with Pigeon Island National Park, which offers outstanding snorkelling and diving just offshore. Even at peak season, it remains uncrowded, and proximity to Trincomalee’s natural harbour, ancient temples and World War II heritage adds cultural depth.
Tangalle

Mirissa
A compact, palm-fringed bay on the southern coast and one of the finest launching points for blue whale and spinner dolphin encounters in Asia. Between December and April, the deep offshore waters offer remarkable marine wildlife experiences. Beyond whale watching, beginner surf, a crescent beach and a lively selection of beach cafes reward longer stays.
Pasikuda
A shallow, reef-protected bay on the east coast with some of the island’s calmest and clearest water, Pasikuda is exceptional for snorkelling above vibrant coral gardens. Its relative remoteness has preserved a natural beauty increasingly rare on developed coastlines, and a small selection of boutique resorts provides genuine tranquillity year-round. Best visited from April to September.
Negombo
Far more than an airport transit point, Negombo is a historic fishing town shaped by Dutch and Portuguese heritage, with a fascinating canal network, a vibrant fish market and characterful seafood restaurants. Arugam Bay
