Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka's first great capital, sacred and inhabited for over a thousand years, is home to the Sri Maha Bodhi, the world's oldest historically documented tree. Vast stupas, monasteries and meditation gardens spread across a wide site best explored by bicycle. At sunset, with pilgrims gathering and temple bells ringing, it is profoundly moving.
