Koneswaram Temple

One of the five ancient Pancha Ishwaram Shiva temples, Koneswaram occupies a position of breathtaking drama on Swami Rock promontory, with cliffs dropping to sea on three sides and the vast natural harbour below. Partially destroyed by the Portuguese in 1624 and rebuilt over centuries, it combines spiritual significance, dramatic setting and layered historical resonance.
