Yapahuwa

A lesser-visited ancient capital and architecturally remarkable fortified citadel, Yapahuwa served as the kingdom's royal seat between 1272 and 1284. Its ornamental staircase combines South Indian and indigenous stonework in ways that anticipate later Kandyan architectural achievement. The surrounding deep forest setting lends it a genuinely contemplative quality.
